Rain is usually light, except in El Nino years when rain can be heavy and long lasting. OutFit reserves the right to cancel tours in the event of potentially dangerous weather or other events. OutFit notifies hike participants by email at least 24 hours before the hike start if the hike is cancelled due to weather. To keep dry during a rainy hike, wear water proof shoes or boots, jackets, pants and hats. DURING THE HIKE
I’m concerned that I might get left behind or won’t be able to keep up with everyone else. Should I attempt a hike?
Absolutely! Urban OutFit’s mission is to expose all participant (at all levels of fitness) to the greatest walking city on Earth, not to leave people collapsed and alone on the city sidewalks. Participants aged 10 to 80 have successfully completed these hikes. Every hike contains participants of varying fitness levels and the group tends to spread itself out over several blocks. OutFit typically employees a "sweeper" to keep the back moving and insure no one gets lost. Most hikes have optional "short-cuts" to reduce the distance and meet up with the main group at a coordinated point 15-20 minutes later. If you get tired or ill and feel you cannot safely continue the hike, please speak to the hike guide. Do not abandon a hike in the middle without letting the guide know.
How fast is the group going during these hikes?
Most hikes average around 3mph. Faster on level ground or downhill; slower going uphill or on rough terrain.
How long does a hike last?
Most hikes last 3-4 hours (unless otherwise noted in the hike descriptions) no matter how many miles are covered. Hikes start and end on time to make sure all hikers can make it to their day's other schedule activities or to the optional post-hike lunch.
Will I have time to take photos during the hike?
The Urban OutFit 7×7 hikes are first and foremost "fitness hikes". Hikes move along at a steady pace with few planned stops longer than a minute or two, which makes taking anything more than point-and-shoot photos difficult. The purpose of these hikes is to expose the hikers to new locales so if you see a spot that inspires your creative spirit, you can re-visit it in the future and take photos at your leisure. The group goal is to make sure the hike ends in the allotted time period so hikers can meet their other scheduled commitments that day.
What happens if I really, really need to go to the bathroom during a hike?
Many of these hikes are through residential neighborhoods or parks that don’t have public restrooms nearby. Every hike has a restroom at the start/end and (at least) one somewhere along the route. If you need an emergency restroom, please speak with the hike leader for any nearby options. Do not leave the hike route without first speaking with the leader.
I missed the start time due to traffic, parking problems or getting lost. What should I do?
Every hike has a 30-min late meeting location along the hike route. Call the hike guide if you are running late for directions to where you can join the group. Remember, all hikes start promptly so that people can complete the hike within the scheduled time.
Can children go on the hikes?
No children under 12 without permission from OutFit. Our hikes are fast-paced, cover many miles, contain stairs and have non-paved sections. These hike factors may make it difficult for walking children to keep up or for you to keep up when pushing a stroller. Some tours walk through neighborhoods in San Francisco with stores that may advertise adult products and services. Please contact us if you have more questions about the suitability of a hike for children.
Can I bring my dog or other pet on the hike?
No dogs or other animals. Please contact us if you need to bring a service animal. Many hikes go through city parks that have no dog rules. If a hike is suitable for a service pet, as a courtesy to your fellow hikers, please make sure your dog or pet is well-behaved and leashed dogs. San Francisco also has dog-leash ordinances
Are your hikes wheel chair accessible?
Most of our tours are NOT wheelchair accessible. All our hikes include some un-paved trails and long flights of stairs with no ramps. The restaurants for the optional post-hike lunch, are ADA-compliant.
What should I do after getting back from a hike to help prevent soreness the next day?
If you are not accustomed to walking steep hills or long distances, your feet and/or legs may be sore following the hike. Even if you can easily run 10 miles, you have more foot strikes per mile when walking, which can make your feet dog tired. Once you get home perform foot and ankle stretches and soak your feet up to your ankles in ice water to help alleviate foot and leg soreness.
How do I make reservations and pay for the optional after hike lunch?
You will receive an individual check for you from the restaurant. We call ahead and let the restaurant know about how many people to expect for lunch. If you reserve, you aren't committed to having lunch. These reservation and payment systems are meant to offer the most flexibility for hikers
Do I need to tip my tour guide?
Gratuities for our hike leaders are never expected. Show us your gratitude by coming on another San Francisco Urban OutFit 7x7 Hike!
